Ataman: “With the help of our fans, we’re going for the win”
Ergin Ataman and Juancho Hernangomez spoke on behalf of Panathinaikos BC AKTOR ahead of tomorrow’s home game against Valencia Basket (5/12, 21:15).
The Greens’ head coach stated: “Valencia’s results show that they are a dangerous team. They play fast, they run, and they score a lot in transition. They are athletic and tough, and we must control the pace of the game. We need to be smart offensively and avoid conceding points in transition.”
Regarding the EuroLeague break for the National Team “windows,” he said: “It’s a game after 10 days, and that’s a difficult situation. We were in good shape before the break with four straight wins, and now tomorrow is a new situation with tough games ahead, like Armani and Fenerbahçe. From what I’ve heard, the arena will be full again. Our fans have helped us a lot, and I hope the same happens tomorrow so we can get the win.”
Asked whether the break helped the players rest, he noted: “It’s not good that we had the break. One or two days are OK, but 10 days is too much for a team. We had a very good rhythm, and now it’s dangerous for us. But this is the same for everyone. Maybe tomorrow we won’t start the game well, but I believe we will be OK as the game goes on.”
On Kenneth Faried being named EuroLeague MVP for November, Ataman emphasized: “With his energy, personality, and performances, Faried deserved this award. It’s very impressive. It’s the first time I’ve seen such performances from a new player in the EuroLeague—earning the MVP award in his first four games. I hope he continues. He is an experienced player. I hope he also makes the All-EuroLeague Final Four First Team.”
Finally, regarding the injured players and absences, he commented: “Omer will play normally. He is healthy, and he will get minutes to help us. The same goes for Grant, who had a stomach issue but practiced. However, Osman, Holmes, and Samodurov will not play.”
Juancho Hernangomez added: “They make very good decisions. They’re a good team, with a good coach and good players. They play aggressively. It will be a very tough game. I think that here, with our fans, it will be a good one. I’m not a big fan of the ‘windows,’ but we are professionals. We have to get back into rhythm. The EuroLeague doesn’t stop, it doesn’t wait for anyone.”
On Kenneth Faried, he said: “He came in and saved us; he gave us energy. I met him many years ago in the NBA and he was the same. He’s a hard worker. I was a rookie, and even though I didn’t speak English, he showed me the way. I enjoy being around him every day”.
Asked whether he wanted to send a message in Greek, he replied: “I know many bad words in Greek. At the end of the season, I’ll give an interview in Greek. The fans are amazing. Playing here is difficult for every team. At home, with our fans, we will have a good game.”
