Toliopoulos: "I can’t wait to wear the Panathinaikos jersey and experience the atmosphere at OAKA" 1 Panathinaikos BC

Vassilis Toliopoulos has officially become the newest member of Panathinaikos AKTOR. Shortly after the announcement of his transfer, the Greek international guard spoke about this new chapter in his career, his reaction when he learned of the club’s interest, and his ambitions for the coming years in the green jersey.

Here are his full statements:

  • What are your initial thoughts as a member of Panathinaikos AKTOR?
“I’m extremely happy to now be part of Panathinaikos. It’s something I’ve wanted to achieve for a long time—to reach the top level of the EuroLeague and compete against the very best. So, when I was informed of Panathinaikos’ interest and offer, I didn’t think twice. It was something I truly wanted to happen.”
  • What are your goals for the next three years?
“Personally, I want to establish myself at this level, contribute to the team’s success, and help win titles. When you play for Panathinaikos, you know that titles are the only thing that matters.”
  • You’ve gone through all the professional tiers in Greece. What have you learned from that journey?
“Throughout the years, no matter where I played, I knew and believed that success comes through hard work and daily commitment. You must also show absolute respect for the club you represent, your coaches, and your teammates. If you follow this path—with humility and a strong work ethic—you can become better and succeed.”
  • What do you consider your defining characteristic on the court?
“In every team I’ve played for, I always gave 1000% of my effort and capabilities. I don’t focus on personal recognition or statistics—those things don’t matter to me. I believe that what truly matters is the team and the jersey, and those always come first. I think if you ask anyone about me, that’s what they’ll say.”
  • From the French Second Division in 2023 to Panathinaikos in 2025—a remarkable journey, right?
“Yes, it’s definitely been quite a ride. If someone had asked me three or four years ago whether I could see myself giving an interview as a Panathinaikos player, I probably wouldn’t have believed them. But I always worked hard and believed that if you stay consistent in your efforts, your time will come. It might take a while, but it will come. I’m proud I made it and that I am now a Panathinaikos player.”
  • What changed or defined you the most in recent years?
“I believe I found the right environment and context to succeed—a team that truly trusted me and gave me the role I was looking for. They weren’t afraid to give me responsibilities on the court. What mattered was talent, work ethic, and what I could contribute to the team. That was the most important factor, and for that, I want to thank my former team, Aris.”
  • You’re entering the most mature phase of your career under Ergin Ataman and alongside Kostas Sloukas. How do you feel about that?
“Kostas is one of the greatest players in Greek basketball history. His career, his titles, and his achievements speak for themselves. I’m really happy to be working with him and can’t wait to share the locker room. I’m sure I’ll learn a lot from him—both on and off the court. As for the coach—what can I say? Just looking at his résumé and titles tells you everything. He is an established coach with a clear philosophy and a winning mentality.”
  • From opponent at OAKA to home player next season. How does it feel to step on that court with the fans behind you?
“I’m truly excited! Watching the atmosphere the Panathinaikos fans create in every home game makes you want to experience it yourself. It’s a moment I’ve been thinking about ever since I signed my contract. I can’t wait to live that experience and feel that atmosphere firsthand.”
